The development of higher railway education in Siberia both before the revolution (Tomsk Technological Institute) and after (Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, Siberian Institute of Transport Engineers, Tomsk Electromechanical Institute of Transport Engineers, OSTU) was associated with the teaching of general humanitarian and socio-economic disciplines, and in particular economics. In 1927, the following disciplines were studied at the Siberian Technological Institute at the Faculty of Mechanics: "Capitalism and the proletarian revolution", "Economic policy", "Industrial Economics".
While in Tomsk, the department brought together specialists in the theoretical foundations of economics and specifically the economics of railway transport. The department bore the names: "Economics", "Socio-economic sciences", "Dialectical materialism", "Marxism-Leninism", "Political economy". Shortly after arrival in Omsk, the "Transport Economics" department became separate. During the transformation of the Russian economy, both the name of the department and the disciplines taught have undergone changes: since 1995, the department has been renamed "World Economic Theory, Politics and Law". Since 2002, new departments were created based on the Economics department: in 2002 it was "Public Relations, Service and Tourism", in 2007 — "Finance, Credit, Accounting and Audit", in 2008 — "Customs and Law". Since 2008 the department has been called "Economics".
At present, the Department of Economics has an experienced teaching staff. All teachers of the department have a scientific degree.
Specialists from among the corporate leaders and employees (from the organizations, whose activities are related to the focus of the educational program being implemented) contribute to the educational process:
- Oleg Nikolaevich Ananev — Member of the Board of the All-Russian public organization of small and medium-sized enterprises "Opora Rossii" (“Support of Russia”), General Director of LLC Imperativ-Sibir ("Imperative-Siberia");
- Andrei Nikolaevich Kalentev — Omskdizel Production and Sales Company LLC, Head of AST Sales and Service Division;

- Roman Borisovich Shtyrliaev — Deputy General Director for Economics of JSC Scientific Research Institute of Technology, Control and Diagnostics of Railway Transport (JSC NIITKD).
Graduates of the department work in financial structures, commercial banks and government bodies. They are owners of their own businesses, specialists and leaders of joint and Russian enterprises, international companies.
